Trump has recently discussed overhauling or even completely eliminating the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), suggesting that more power should be given back to the states. He has also expressed that states should take on greater responsibility when disasters strike, arguing that those familiar with the states are better equipped to respond and provide relief. With areas of North Carolina still uninhabitable under FEMA control, it raises an important question: Would the state of North Carolina have done a better job 120 days later?
FEMA's payroll budget for 2025 is $33.1 billion, supporting 6,186 positions and 17,328 full-time equivalents (FTEs). This funding level represents an increase of $2.5 billion compared to the continuing appropriations act for Fiscal Year 2024.
This approach would save the government a significant amount of money, allowing funds to be allocated toward more supplies, food, and shelter, which state employees could distribute who are already on the states payroll.
